he ain't heavy...

It didn't occur to me, or any of the parents in my son's class, that it was odd that we were schlepping into school everyday like a troupe of precision valets juggling back packs and lunch bags and various other minutae that make up the needs of a second grade student, whilst the kids skipped merrily ahead. Until the day that our teacher came out and pointed out the obvious: "You're not his sherpa". Ugh. That wiped the smiles off of all of our faces...and then replaced them with even bigger grins. We were free! It was official. No. We can NOT carry that bag for you, Darling. Even better, this gave me license to go ahead and order the best back pack ever. Lands' End has a very cool bunch of wheelie back packs (that still can be converted to regular packs with the shoulder straps zipped inside the compartment though it's doubtful you'll ever use them). The coordinating lunch bags clip onto the outside of the pack so they don't take up valuable inside space. While not inexpensive, I am pointing this out now because come August you will be inundated with back to school savings emails and you can qualify these as "investment pieces" because they will see you through a few years for sure. If you just can't wait to monogram and order now, the current teaser is offering a $15 gift certificate on back to school clothing later this summer, $20 if you buy a lunch bag too and free shipping on all orders over $50 (USD). And worth every penny to see the troupes rolling themselves in the front doors of the school like tiny commuters catching flights, their spinal health now also intact - while you just bought yourself extra time to get that latte. A for effort, Mom.
