SUMMER STYLE CLASS | 3 Ways to Do Off-Duty Like an It Girl

via Blog and the City

Originally posted in The Fashion Scoop

Fridays are always good, but this is not just any Friday. It's the Friday before the long weekend (yay!) and like so many of you, I plan on making the most of these next 3 days. For people who are camping this weekend, please stop reading now, douse yourself in OFF, and come back to us once you've come to your senses. Camping is for tees, joggers and, for the hardcore fashion peeps like me, cute casual looks like these. For the rest of us, it's time to chat off-duty summer style.

There's the time-off outfits we all wear when we know we won't be seeing anyone. Do All-Day PJ's ring a bell? But for those precious vacation hours when we're meeting friends for lunch, heading to a fun backyard bbq, or going out for date night, it's always a bonus to look amazing. Here's how I suggest you do it:

BE A BOHO BEAUTY | Tassels, fringe & flowy dresses will help you feel like a boho goddess, whether you're hitting up a music festival or just heading to the Market. Inspiration: Pretty Little Liars' Shay Mitchell's flowy beach waves (use a salt spray to mimic her tousled beachy perfection), sweet cotton dress and cool leather sandals. A fun straw fedora will protect your locks from the sun and/or rain (fingers crossed for sun, please) when you're outside.

BE A MODERN MUSE | Let's face it: a modern style influencer like Olivia Palermo never really goes 'off-duty'. If you always like to look polished like OP, opt for sleek black & white pieces which mix & match perfectly if you decide to head away for the weekend. Don't forget sky-high sandals, an enviably awesome watch and a pop-bright handbag. Oh, and chic don't-bother-me sunnies - after all, the paparazzi doesn't take time off either.

HAVE A GARDEN PARTY | Want to look sweet and summer-ready like Taylor Swift? Fun florals, either as a dress or matching set, will help you bring out your feminine side this weekend no matter what's on the agenda. Keep it low key with cute sneakers or add heels for a flirty date night look.

WELCOME TO NEW YORK: My Pics from the WHBM Spring '15 Press Preview

My ready-for-takeoff #OOTD, incl. NY-ready choc. brown nails and leather joggers.

When White House Black Market, the kind-of-a-big-deal American retailer, offers to fly you to NYC for their Spring '15 preview, the answer is obvious. And so I told them 'no'. I mean, I had already promised my daughter that I'd go along on her field trip to the symphony that day and had committed to a few events in Toronto that night, and I always keep my promises. I told my husband, expecting him to give me a big super-parent high five, but all he gave me was an 'Are you Craaazy??' face and shook his head. My daughter was equally perplexed, 'You get to fly to New York City?? That's so cool! Can you just bring me back something from American Girl?' So, I backpedalled and said yes, only to find out that not only was WHBM going to fly me to NY, but they'd also arranged car service and a hotel room in the Fashion District. Um, sweet?

Our small but lucky group of Canadian bloggesses met at YYZ, airport style at the ready and coffees in hand. WHBM knows how to pick 'em: Gracie Carroll, Robin Edwards, Susan Liberatore, Iva Grbesic and (thank goodness I said yes) me. Doug Ford was directly in front of us at customs. Ominous. But nothing could rattle us now. We were en route to New York. This was a good day. We sat down at our gate and, perhaps to shift the balance of our Ford Nation run-in, in walks Robert Pattinson! He was underworldly pale, had a toothpick stuck between his teeth, and looked like he hadn't showered in a month. Swoon... We had maybe 25 people on our little plane and 1 of them was R-Patz. These were good odds. Our jazz hands, loud mentions of our blogs and even Susan's attempts at a pic for her teenage daughter were met with, well, nothing. Over it.

We landed at La Guardia and drove into the heart of NY to stroll and shop. We made our way to the much-buzzed-about Café Cluny, a gem of a place in the West Village where the city's most fashionable flock and where the wait staff all wear Saint James. Waris Ahluwalia sat beside us and Derek Jeter sat behind. You have to go.

At night, we headed to the main event: the White House Black Market Spring '15 Preview at the so-hip-it-hurts Jack Studios. Picture pink, black and white-clad mannequins and massive green topiaries spelling out WHBM, set against the backdrop of an all-white space inside and the NYC skyline beyond. Breathtaking. We met the entire WHBM crew, mingled with other US editors and caught up with a few other Canadians including Afiya Francisco, Carolyne Brown of Loulou Magazine and Flare's Tyler Franch. My picks? The athletic separates which I'll sport both in and out of the gym, the ultra-feminine spring frocks in florals and pastel solids, and the flattering oversized sunglasses which I will definitely be picking up when they hit stores. Count me a super fan, as biased as I might currently be.

The next day was spent shopping (and shopping, and more shopping) but given our crazy celeb karma on this trip, I wasn't totally surprised when Iva whispered, 'Isn't that Olivia Palermo??' And there she was most unmistakably, my fav street style fashion icon, walking directly ahead of us on 5th Ave. I sidled up beside her and in my most humble voice said, 'Olivia, we're fashion bloggers from Canada. Would it be possible for us to take our pic with you?' OP looked genuinely flattered (not a hint of Robert Pattinson's 'tude at all). Her sweet mom grabbed my phone, snapped a few pics and we headed back to La Guardia, exhausted, overwhelmed and completely happy.

See what can happen when you say 'yes'? Thanks so much White House Black Market for an incredible time. Can't wait to shop your collection when our Canadian snow thaws.

A New York Minute

Big yellow taxis

My bad for not posting over the past few days but I have a very good excuse: I'm in New York. Gone to NYC is like the blogger version of Gone Fishing; a necessity to get that much-needed respite from the grind of everyday life. Oh, but instead of serenity and big fish, it's the bustle and shoe sales we bloggers are after.

White House Black Market flew a lucky few of us to NYC for their Spring '15 preview and so we've taken a few days to take in the city. I'm home later tonight so will post shortly about the preview and our epic celeb karma. I won't give it all away but let's just say that if you know anything about fashion, the initials O.P. might ring your bell.

'Til then, back to this loud, gritty, most wonderful city.

How Celebs are Wearing the New Banana Republic Milly Collection

Olivia Palermo makes a compelling case for the elephant print Banana Republic Milly Collection shorts. Yes, of course her dog matches...

Maria Menounos wears her striped maxi. LOVE this dress.

When faced with a fashion dilemma, I always ask myself the following: 'What would Olivia Palermo do?' As I write this post, I'm hurtling down the train tracks towards Toronto for tonight's Banana Republic Milly Collection launch party, hosted by Banana Republic (naturally) and Milly founder and designer, Michelle Smith. I knew that the opportunity to pre-shop the collection would be tempting when I got a sneak peek at the lookbook pics - Milly's signature vintage-inspired prints, gorgeous pops of colour, to-die-for dresses, etc. etc.- but thought I might be able to keep my Visa on lockdown all the same. I mean, how many dresses does a girl need?

And then my girl at Banana Republic sent me a pic of OP rocking the elephant print shorts. I don't own elephant print shorts. Even Olivia couldn't say no so how could I, a mere mortal, possibly resist all of that cuteness. Not to mention, I also own a white dog named Fonzie who, if given a proper bath, would coordinate so perfectly. Elephant shorts + black blazer + cute white dog = fashion win.

Did I mention the Banana Republic Milly Collection also includes menswear? Oooh, we could both bust out Milly at the dog park. #ahhhh

Will let you know what I end up choosing (elephant shorts, pink shorts w white blazer from the lookbook or the Maria Menounos maxi?) but I can already see that this is gonna be trouble. The collection is available in select Banana Republic stores this Thursday, May 30th and ranges from $24.50 - $175. Wish me luck x
