MAD FOR PLAID | 3 Ways to Wear It Now

via FashionVibe.net

Fall and plaid are my idea of the perfect partners. When faced with a cold day, a great plaid accent always warms things up. Sure, a solid scarf, flannel shirt or cozy coat all get the job done, but it's the bold print that puts a unique stamp on any lacking outfit, adding colour and texture to any solid ensemble. This season, it seems like every store has checked off checks on their must-have lists.

Here are my 3 fave ways to do plaid right now. Scroll down for outfit inspo:

1) THE REVERSIBLE SCARF | While silk scarves might be a Parisian thing, I see the chunky plaid scarf as our Canadian signature. Wear it draped over your shoulders or neck and belted around your waist, leave it long and flowing, tie it artfully around your neck or even toss it over your couch when you get home. This season, even the chain stores are doing luxe-looking reversible scarves so you don't have to commit to just one print. Genius.

2) THE DRESSED-UP PLAID SHIRT | You can always wear a plaid shirt with jeans but this season, why not give it the glam treatment? I love a plaid shirt worn with a pencil skirt and sexy heels for a perfect date-night/going out look. The unexpected combo will help you achieve cool-girl status, no matter what your age.

3) PARTY PLAID |  Tired of being stuck in a sea of LBD's? Plaid skirts, dresses and scarves are an easy way to look instantly festive and stand out in a crowd of black. If you've already got black pants and a white shirt, simply add a plaid coat or blazer, then tie a black grosgrain ribbon around your neck for your next cocktail party. Easy!

DECK THE HOLS | 3 Jeanious Holiday Outfit Ideas

When DENIZEN from the Levi’s brand asked me to be their Canadian brand ambassador, I did a few celebratory lunges, then set out to test-drive their many styles of jeans. I've been super impressed by the fit and of course the $30 price point, and narrowed it down to a few favs along the way, including these sick black skinnies. My go-to pair of the moment? The DENIZEN Modern Straight in dark indigo. I call it the forgiving skinny, leg-hugging all the way down but with a friendly break at the ankle so you don't feel like you've been swallowed whole by your jeans. Blame it on the nog but I'm craving extra breathing room this season, aren't you?

I've put together 3 cute outfit ideas for those of you searching for some denim inspiration over the hols. With the help of a few plaid pieces, a little faux fur and some winter-ready extras, you can don your denim everywhere (yes, even $30 denim), from downtime with your fam to a big New Year's bash. If you're at Target picking up last-minute things this week, wander through the DENIZEN racks and be sure to try on a pair or two while you're at it.

Off to write more cards (come on Canada Post, can we make this happen?), wrap some more gifts and speaking of nog, is 9:30 too early or can we just let that rule slide over the holidays? Yup, we are so on the same page.

Be back next week with more New Year's outfit inspiration. Until then, hope you have the merriest Christmas lovelies! xx

CHECKMATE: How to Pull Off Plaid

Though plaid has proven its staying power throughout the ages, it's a print that waffles between incredibly cool and tragically nerdy. While plaid is the Royals, Kurt Cobain and Gwen Stefani, it's also lumberjacks, farmers and really bad golf pants. Plaid has clearly ingratiated itself with the cool kids again this fall, since everyone (l mean EVERYone) is parading around in plaid shirts right now. From buttoned right up to worn open over a graphic tee, (aka. the hipster blazer) plaid shirts are the layer of choice for this in-between fall weather, while plaid pants, skirts and leggings are perfect for those willing to take some fashion risks. And, of course, it's easy to get behind all of the pretty plaid accessories, from classic tartan scarves to studded plaid crossbody bags.

So, how do you pull off plaid this season? Luckily, it doesn't take a lot of fashion know-how to make it work...

Tough Love: Grunge 2.0

Freja Beha Erichsen gets her grunge on in the Reserved Fall '13 Lookbook.

You may not have been lucky enough to live through it; The days when Donna, David, Steve, Kelly, Brenda, Brandon, Dylan and some random girl named Andrea (An-DRAY-ah) ruled primetime and we all knew the Beverly Hills zip code. Where Liv Tyler and her besties worked at Empire Records, selling music (but not selling out, of course). Where Ethan Hawke and Jared Leto were so hot but everything else was like, 'Whatever'. Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder filled walkmans with All Apologies and Rear View Mirrors. And instead of selfies, tweets and Instagram, there were just camcorders, playing cards and bush parties. Then Kurt Cobain died, Soundgarden broke up, and Britney Spears put on her cheerleader outfit, and the grunge era was officially gone. Sigh...

Until now, that is. Grunge style is back in a very big way, with plaid flannel, ripped jeans, layered up tees, floral frocks, slip dresses and combat boots flooding the stores this fall. Wicked.

Whether you were a '90s teen or are just trying this out for the first time, see below for the essential pieces you need to be a total grunge goddess. (Oh, and don't forget to rock out to Nirvana to get in the (teen) spirit)...
