3 Real Life Ways to Wear Winter White

A winter white look you could actually wear outside. Source: Pinterest.

Winter white is one of those trends that look so good in pictures but can go so totally wrong in practice. From Gwyneth Paltrow in that stunning white Tom Ford gown at the Oscars to to all of the pretty white pant suits on the Fall '13 runways, there's nothing dreamier than head-to-toe white. But in real life? Think ketchup, slush puddles and toddlers. Add a chocolate lab and minus 20 weather and that floaty white skirt doesn't look quite so cute anymore, does it?

Sure, white might not be the most practical colour but there are ways to make it work for your everyday life. Read on for easy tips to pull it off and 3 chic looks to inspire you to add more winter white to your wardrobe...

How to Look Cute Without Even Trying

Slouchy, dishevelled and oversized? Count me in. Photo courtesy H&M

Fashion has never been about comfort - it's just the unfortunate price we pay to look good. And while I totally get the desire to look tall and skinny, even I've had enough of the toe-pinching and stomach sucking for a little while. It's no wonder guys are usually more laid-back. I mean, wouldn't you be a little less irritable if you could actually feel your toes?

Luckily, one of fall's biggest trends goes completely against the typical fashion grain - you know the one where pain is good and comfort is bad. The new look is all about looking like you just rolled out of bed. Um, sign me up (you'll find me on the couch), show me the way to the sweatshirt section and toss me in front of Garance Doré. I am sooo ready to rock this.

From cozy knits that you won't want to take off, to cooler versions of your lived-in sweatshirts, to the cutest toques that'll hid any signs of bed-head, I've hand-picked the season's cutest, most comfy finds. We'll go back to painful fashion next time but for now, let's just enjoy this moment. And breathe.....

Razzle, Dazzle: How to Wear Bright Blue

It's funny the way colour works;  One minute, designers are claiming that black is out, that bright colour is in. The next hot minute, brights are shunned and black is totally back. I mean, colour? That was sooo last season. While black & white (along with of-the-moment grey, navy and pink) are currently reigning supreme in fashion's inner circles, I'm really feeling bold, bright blue, too. How about you?

BREAKING PLAID: 3 Ways to Wear It Now

A sweet look from the ASOS Fall/Winter '13 Lookbook. Photo via ASOS

Originally posted in The CLOSET

Let me preface this post by saying that I don't have a problem with lumberjacks. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with small towns (if you saw where I live, you'd understand that small doesn't even begin to describe it.) But between bearded axe-wielding dudes, Highland flings and buttoned-up cowboys in dad jeans, plaid can quickly become the punchline of a bad fashion joke.

If you haven't noticed, plaid is everywhere right now. The print was one of the most favoured on the Fall '13 runways of NY, Milan and yes, even Paris, with dresses, skirts and suits covered in très chic tartans of every stripe and colour. Between the mix-and-match plaids at Céline and the 90's grunge vibe at Dries Van Noten, plaid is the print to pick up this season, whether super chilled out for a Saturday afternoon or primped up and polished for a day at the office.

Love plaid but not sure how to wear it? Here are 3 chic ways to get all tartaned up this fall...

Test-Drive: Sears' Fall LOOK Report

I'm a sucker for a challenge, especially when it involves shopping. And so, when Sears Canada asked me to check out their new fall collection (and I saw how insanely beautiful Bar Refaeli looked in their new Nevada campaign), I replied 'Count me in!'

The mission? Test-drive the new fall looks from the Sears Fall Look! Report, including pieces from Nevada, Jessica and Attitude. I'll admit that I'm not a regular Sears shopper but was excited to see the new fashion direction in person. After all, Sears Canada was my first internship after fashion school. Meeemoriiies....

I arrived at the London Sears and immediately made a beeline for the Nevada section, plastered with posters of the lovely (and now Leo-less) Bar Refaeli. I loved the camo pants (if I didn't already own a pair, they would have been #1 on my list) and was smitten with the floaty blouses and cognac biker vest.

Next, I cleaned up in the Attitude section. Graphic black & white pieces, from a perfect black skater skirt to sleek and super sexy leggings to cozy colour-blocked and patterned knits made their way into my ever-growing pile.

Finally, I had to check out the Jessica section and scored a gorgeous merlot peplum dress (this would make a perfect office dress) and a printed Tory Burch-esque shirtdress. They both fit like a dream and were under $50 each. I honestly could have easily taken both home if not for my compulsive shopping problem. Remember what my imaginary therapist says, ‘Breathe. Control. Restraint. Is another pair of shoes really going to make it all better?’ The answer is yes. Yes, they will. But right, breathe, control, restraint. Phew.

An hour later, I emerged with the skater skirt, faux-leather leggings and an amazing chevron print knit, all for just over $100. Don't be a hater, you need to check out this new collection. You will not believe how far Sears has come in the last few years.

Oh, and before you go, don't forget to check out the full Sears Fall Look! Report or follow Sears Canada on Pinterest for some outfit inspo.

Happy shopping and happy Friday!
