Your Fall '13 Denim Guide

Dree Hemingway and her boyfriends for Gap Fall '13 - photo via Gap

I have a confession to make: I haven't bought 'normal' jeans in years. I've picked up pairs upon pairs of brights and pastels in practically every colour and printed skinnies, too, but standard issue jeans? Nope. Not since I splurged on a pair of Sevens almost 7 years ago. Blame it on my job (the occupational hazard of always wanting the newest, latest trend) and having a few kids along the way, but I guess I've somehow forgotten my roots - or at least the roots of every girl's wardrobe.

So, I finally pulled out my old jeans that have been hiding away in my closet and since I'm too embarassed to show you a pic, let me break it down for you. Super low rise, old-school bootcut from the front and from the back? OMG, enormous. It's like the pockets forgot they were pockets and had instead morphed into massive magnifying glasses for my bum. I'm going to blame that all on the jeans. The rearview offenders were promptly tossed into a giveaway bag (ha! that'll show 'em), leaving room for a few new pairs to take their place.

Ready for new jeans but not exactly sure where to start? I've sorted through the piles of denim out there, from ultra-distressed jeans to the coolest new denim jackets, guaranteed to bring you right up-to-speed for Fall '13...

She Got Game

Dree Hemingway dons an orange toque at Balmain's Spring 2013 show - photo Vogue.co.uk

In the small town where I live, it's hunting season 365.  It's not uncommon to see men dressed in full-blown camo wandering the downtown streets, XL Double Double from Timmies in hand and a mad glint in their eyes. Women need not worry about cat calls or slimy once-overs;  it's creatures of the 4-legged variety that turn these guys on, and an entirely different kind of rack they're after.  They haul themselves up into their Ford F650 with a bumper sticker that reads, 'Ditch the Bitch, Let's Go Hunting' and head out for the soon-to-be-not-so-bucolic woods, ready for a day of drinkin', bondin' and big game huntin'.  I've heard from some local sources that an orange toque is a wise investment so as not to be mistaken for a buck, but, as pointed out by rlr mini yesterday, it also makes a super cute fashion statement.  With Hallowe'en just around the bend, forego the cheesy costume and do as Dree Hemingway by pairing your orange cap with a little bit of sparkle and a lot of black.  Adorbs, right?  And a smart safety precaution, should you happen to trip through a wooded area on your way home from the party...

Might I suggest:

Thinsulate Toque, $6.99 or so at Home Hardware or Canadian Tire

The Horsey Set

Dree Hemingway for Ermanno Scervino - Autumn 2012

Originally posted in The LOOK

As long as I can remember, I've been a city girl. I would look at the cowboy boots, hats, spurs and far-from-rad plaid in country music videos and feel something akin to mild food poisoning. When my friends would flock to our local bar for some honky-tonk, I'd tag along and even sing (Ohhh, way down 'yonder on the Chatahoochie, never knew how much that muddy water meant to me....). I'd even line-dance a little (because seriously, it was kind of a precursor to the flash mob, no?) but the stylista in me just couldn't handle the ill-fitting jeans, the tacky hats or the cliché my-dog-just-croaked-and-now-I'm-gon'-die-toooo lyrics. Not to mention horses; as in, I won't even mention horses after the number of near-death experiences I've had in their presence. Can horses smell fear? Then again, as the years went by, I grew to admire a small but mighty group of boot-stompin' babes: the fearless Dixie Chicks, the hilarious Dolly Parton, the style-obsessed Carrie Underwood and the bad-boy bashing Taylor Swift. Even A-listers like Gwyneth Paltrow have gone a little bit country these days.

But horses gone haute? This fall, designers joined the horsey set in a big way, giving us plenty of ways to get in touch with our inner country girl, be it full-blown spur-jangling country as seen on the Isabel Marant runway or the more refined equestrian aesthetic perfected by Altuzarra, Givenchy and Herve Leger, complete with sleek riding boots, equine prints, and chic tweed blazers. Like country music, I'm loving this trend in small doses, with a cute little cowboy boot here, or a cropped riding jacket there.

So, how 'bout you? Will you hop on the horsey bandwagon this fall? Yay, or neigh? Check out my favourite country finds at Intercity Shopping Centre right now. (And be sure to look at them boots, ya hear?)
